Transformations of the Canadian Cultural Mosaic

When we think about Canadian identity today, the most pervasive metaphor that springs to mind is that of a ‘mosaic of cultures’ in recognition of Canada’s multiethnic mixture of peoples, languages and cultures. Although the image of the mosaic, with its tightly assembled tesserae, may suggest a certain rigidity, today the connotation of Canada’s cultural metaphor has undergone dynamic and productive transformations, which reflect the crucial cultural and generational changes resulting from the country’s shifting immigration patterns. Acknowledging the fundamental role played by immigrant and First Nations artists and writers in moulding the Canadian identity, this volume investigates the multiple transformations of the cultural mosaic in relation to literary, artistic and creative expressions. The various contributions, which range from scholarly academic essays to mixed forms of creative writing, deal with adaptations in literature, migration, transnational identities, and the reappropriation and evolution of autochthonous cultures and art forms. Within an interdisciplinary framework, they explore how Canadian cultural innovations have helped to transform the structure of the mosaic by capturing the spirit of cultural pluralism and of co-existing multiple identities, often seeing the reformulation of ethnicity in transcultural terms. Se pensiamo all'identità canadese oggi, ed al suo ricco miscuglio di genti, lingue e culture, la metafora più rappresentativa che viene in mente è quella del ‘mosaico di culture’. Tutt'altro che statica, questa metafora culturale continua a trasformarsi in modo dinamico ed efficace, riflettendo i profondi cambiamenti culturali e generazionali che derivano dai mutati flussi migratori verso il Paese. Alla luce del ruolo crescente che hanno scrittori e artisti migranti e aborigeni nel forgiare l'identità canadese, il volume si propone di investigare le molteplici trasformazioni del mosaico culturale nell'ambito di produzioni artistiche, letterarie e espressive. Nei vari saggi e testi creativi vengono esplorate tematiche quali l'adattamento letterario, la migrazione, l'identità transnazionale e la riappropriazione di forme d'arte e culture autoctone. Analizzando le innovazioni culturali canadesi da un'ottica interdisciplinare, i contributi evidenziano come il mosaico abbia saputo cogliere lo spirito del pluralismo culturale e della coesistenza di identità plurime, spesso attraverso una riformulazione transculturale del concetto di etnicità.
